The B HERE campaign is proud to showcase the winners of the Make Your Mark contest. Each of these winning contestants not only inspired other B HERE members to vote for their submission, but they helped inspire hepatitis B awareness among the Asian-American community.
We would like to especially congratulate Phuong Tran for being named the Grand Prize Winner of the Make Your Mark contest. Each category winner was put in front of a panel of judges who then selected the Grand Prize Winner. And while all three category winners submitted exceptional entries, the judges felt Phuong Tran best exemplified the B HERE campaign.
If you haven't done so, we welcome you to take a look at how these artists successfully combined creativity with an important and life-changing message. Below you will find each winning artist's story and submission for your viewing pleasure.
Phuong Tran — Song/Story Winner
Description: This is a true story describing a man who was suffering from hepatitis B. It contrasts between how healthy and vibrant he was to how emaciated he became once the hepatitis B virus caused cancer. By doing so, it highlights the severity of the disease and how it affects not only those infected by hepatitis B, but also their loved ones. The man in this story passed away ten days after our meeting.
Sam Ryu — Art Winner
Description: My story starts way back with my grandmother. She passed away due to liver complications caused by chronic hepatitis B when my mom was still in college. Unaware of such a condition, my mom decided to get checked and soon found out that she, too, was infected with CHB.
Fast forward to 2005, the summer before my sophomore year of high school. I was in Korea and the big thing at the time was matchmaking with stereotypes based on your blood type; similar to horoscope matches. No one in my family knew what blood type I was, so I got tested and found out two things — I was a type B+ and an HBV carrier.
Due to the lack of medical insurance and limiting financial circumstances, my family perpetuated the Asian-American mentality of, "If you're not dying, then you don't have to go to the hospital." However, upon finding out about the B HERE campaign and doing further research, I now have a new sense of urgency regarding this potentially life-threatening virus, and have planned for both me and my mom to get monitored regularly. And even though there are some days, like in the submitted photo, where my mom doesn't feel like doing much, she smiles, and I smile, because despite having hepatitis B, we are blessed with so much joy and love in our lives.
Bao Nguyen — Video Winner
Description: A short Public Service Announcement (PSA) called "Don't," reminding people to get tested and not let life pass them by.
